She does not claim to be an academic historian and does not provide footnotes or engage in professional debates. As a child and as an adult, she lived on and loved some of the stations which she writes about. Durack uses business and personal records as well as oral interviews and her life-long memories of the stories that “old-timers” told. ![]() The book is traditional history, published in 1959, and extremely well researched and written. Like the grass on which it was based, it could disappear in a season of drought or flood. Kings in Grass Palaces was a phrase that Durack’s grandfather used, indicating that while the family sometimes prospered off the lush grasses, their prosperity was never secure. Writing about him and other pioneering friends and relatives, she gives us not only a family story but a useful overview of the history of the western movement of ranchers and settlers into previously unexplored lands. Mary Durack (1913-1994) was the granddaughter of Patrick Durack, who was a leader in the spread of ranching in Australia, first in southwestern Queensland and then in the Kimberly region on the northwest edge of the continent. London : Constable,, c1959.Īn enjoyable, well researched history of the pioneering role Durack’s family played in the expansion of Australian ranching. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was intrigued by the relationship between Betsy and Fred and Will and Ceal as both in a way seemed to be in abusive relationships. I can see why the author did it but I think the number of characters and jumping around with time zones made it a bit harder to follow eg in Hettas's early narrative I found I had to constantly remind myself how old she was she seemed to be drinking cider in a pub when she was about 15 and travelling alone to London at a very young age. ![]() Was she there to provide a balance and be a character outside of the conflict? If so I think Hetta carried that part better. She seemed to me to be superfluous while the othet family members have a role and play a part in the narrative. I would however like to ask her why she introduced the character of Syd. Particularly as the themes of guilt and unresolved and buried issues seem to run through the book. Most of the questions I would want to ask the author were covered in the Q&A at the back of the book, ie what influence her own parents and experience of the Communist Party had on the characters of Betsy and Fred and how her work as a psychologist has affected the novel. ![]() I have just finished Cousins, and although I didn't find it an easy read I am glad I have finished it, also very pleased to have been given a free copy as it made me read a book I probably wouldn't normally buy. ![]() ![]() This time, they are prepared and shows that they are against any change. The Martians are also resistant to change in "The Third Expedition," by pretending to be the crew's relatives and killing them. In "The Earthmen," the Martians are oblivious to the change that the mistake the Earthmen as lunatics and the stop the change by putting them in an insane asylum and killing them. Yll is so jealous of Ylla that he has to stop the change that is happening by killing the earthmen. On Mars, however, the Martians are resistant to change. That foreshadows the change that will soon take place on Mars. The theme is shown in many of the stories starting with "Rocket Summer" which shows change taking place on Earth. One of the overarching themes in The Martian Chroniclesis xenophobia, the resistance to change.
